Behind the Wheel: Staying Vigilant

No one gets in their car with the intention of having an accident, but accidents do indeed happen. Here are some tips for what you can do to stay vigilant while operating your motor vehicle:

Look for obstacles: In addition to looking ahead, remember to look behind you and off to both sides as well. Identifying hazards is the first step to being able to avoid falling prey to them.

Keep your own distractions to a minimum: If you travel with a pet, keep them secured in the vehicle. If you travel with children, pull over to a safe area to tend to their needs rather than trying to drive through a temper tantrum or back seat sibling rivalry.

Anticipate the actions of others: Do not assume other drivers see you. Be prepared to react to other distracted drivers. For example, just because you have a green light doesn't mean you should proceed through an intersection without looking.

Your commitment to safety can largely decrease your odds of being involved in an accident. In short, stay vigilant!
